lol... what a light to cast Paul in. Bad as that song was, it got them a little money and some chicks. Give me a check and some fringe benefits and I'll play the hell out of that thing. Then I'll pack up my gear for the Madonna gig.

Paul's great, and has definitely been an influence on me. One fond teenage memory was the day I got my drivers license, and drove around Old Westbury while cranking his demo tape from before the Racer X days. I e-mailed Paul this past summer to see if I could get a copy of that old tape since I lost mine long ago. He answered back, but unfortunately stated he currently did not have access to the old stuff, and thanked me for remembering it. Great tape. Very interesting to hear how good he was at 15, and what he sounded like before going semi neo-classical. He actually had more of what some would call when referencing Gilbert, "style". Less patternistic, and very VH influenced.

Here are two really great vids of Paul from way back in '86. The quality is pretty crappy, but some of the shit he plays is damn scary, especially considering he's just fucking around (and only 19!).

Part 1

Part 2

Haven't watched them yet, but got 'em both loaded up and ready to go. Just got home from the shop.

I've never looked up Paul's birthdate, but I was under the impression that he was 15 somewhere's during 1983, putting him at around 17 for these vids (looks 17 too... and check out those fuckin' shorts... lol... I had the same shit!... lucky a ball wasn't hangin' out there). There's a little story behind this assumption.

I got my driver's license in Nov. '83. Eeek! Nausea In the early days of the Guitar Player Mag "Spotlight" column (which also featured a yet unknown, Yngwie Malmsteen), that year, a then stated, 15 year old Paul Gilbert, from Baltimore, Maryland, got himself into that column, offering a tape of his stuff, for a few bucks, consisting of about 90 minutes of various things, consisting of rough studio mixes of songs, live performances, and solos (Let's hear it for commas!).

Mr. Chris 929 got the tape, and made a copy for me. The very day I got my license, I asked my parents if I could take the good car for a spin. They, being the awesome parents they are, said yes. So, I grabbed my Gilbert tape, hopped into the car, and cruised through Old Westbury, cranking the P.G.

Coming up on two years ago, I e-mailed Paul regarding this tape. Chris and I both lost our copies somehow, a long time ago, and would totally love to hear it again. "Thrilled shitless" was the phrase I used in the mail. I even promised never to sell it on Ebay, etc. I remember so many things from that tape. It was actually my favorite stage of Paul's playing, and still is. I call it "advanced Van Halen". If you heard the tape, you'd know exactly what I mean.

Well, Paul was nice enough to write back that he did not currently have access to his old stuff, and thanked me for remembering it. Rolling Eyes Hopefully, he'll have access to it again one day. It's been two years since then. Might be time to write him again... heh.

At any rate, I love Paul's stuff throughout his different stages. But, to be honest, his super-early stuff was the best, IMHO. Everybody knows the "Gilbert patterns" when they hear them, but Paul was a lot less attached to that sound, back, back, back in the day. It was fuckin' tremendous.

Dan, these videos you've found, represent to me, the transition between the "original" P.G., and the Racer X days. '86 was right smack in between those time periods, and you can hear both. Awesome find!

These are most definitely being archived.

Edit: lovely... I just re-stated the same post from last January.

lol Tell us the story again, grandpa!

From what I've read, Paul was born Nov. 6th, 1966, which would make him likely 19 in these vids. A couple of different sites have that as his birthdate.

Anyway, I know what you mean. I still like Paul's playing now, but he's just intense as fuck in this vid, and doesn't constantly do the "Gilbert patterns", like you said. It's a really great combination of bad-assedness and frightening speed.

Hahahaha... Gramps Grayson, eh? Why, you 'lil whippersnapper!! Mad

Bring this thread up in another 6 months, and see if I do it again.

So, Paul's another 66'er (that Spotlight column definitely said he was 15 though). Didn't know that. I think he originally comes from Baltimore.

So, yeah... the stuff on the tape is even less pattern-y than these vids. Sounded a lot like Van Halen too... heh. First heard it around the time I got my license...

Some clips from a clinic at GIT back in '87... It's cool shit! Might have gotten this off of the Bumbleforum, don't remember...

Hey John, didn't you have the PG demo back in the day? Man, I'd love to hear about that if you did... hehe

Oh, man! This reminds me so much of the time I had Paul's old demo tape, and I had just gotten my driver's license. Have I mentioned this?

I'll have to check if I ever saved the vids from the old links in this thread, but upon tonight's youtubing, they're all gone due to copyright violations! Sad Either way, I'm saving this latest find. Thanks, Dan-o!

Dammit, Paul! Let your super old stuff be available to your earliest of early fans! And I want that tape! Mad

"Here comes the judge, here comes the judge, here comes the judge... Aw, fuck off, judge!!!"

Do I get brownie points for that???
